Stories of the Y: Meet Some Of Our Members Who Are Making an Impact
AJ Wohlers, Fargo
“You are morbidly obese.” These four words changed my life… and spun me into an even deeper depression. I knew I was big;
but those are words that no one wants to hear.
Gandhi is famous for saying, “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” When I started to change my life I decided that I wasn’t going to just do this for me. My experience with the YMCA AmeriCorps program has positively changed my life. I started my service with AmeriCorps in 2009 as a freshman in college and continue to serve today. When I began looking for a part-time job I really wanted to work with children and AmeriCorps seemed like the right fit. However, I didn’t realize that through AmeriCorps I would go from a student looking for a part-time job, to a role-model making a difference. Read More >>

Gold Star Marching Band twirlers and national champions, Courtney Stack, 16, Moorhead, and Shaina Magel, 17, Fargo, have been training for big performance days since they were 6 and 7 years old as part of the YMCA of Cass Clay baton twirling program. They know the twirling drill well, which of course begins with several hours of practice per week, usually by themselves in the Y gym, racquetball court or with the NDSU band during the Gold Star Band season. Lisa, Butch, Margo and Patrick were some of the first members to complete the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program at the YMCA of Cass and Clay Counties. Sandy, Butch’s wife, was his support person through the 12-week course which builds strength and self confidence for cancer survivors.
