What is Pay It Forward?
This holiday season, our YMCA community is giving back by giving away membership and youth program scholarships to families and individuals who may be going through financial struggles, experiencing medical issues, or simply going through a tough time.
During this season of increased mental and physical strain, do you know a family or individual who would benefit from belonging to the YMCA or participating in a youth program, like Wacky Science or Basketball League? Nomination forms are available below or at either Fercho or Schlossman YMCA through November 30, 2020. Pay It Forward recipients (and their nominators) will be contacted between December 14, 2020 and January 11, 2021.
Help make these opportunities a possibility. Any amount will help families and individuals in our community live healthier, more connected lives and provide a place to invest in their spiritual, mental and physical health in a time where this is needed more than ever. In January 2020, the YMCA of Cass and Clay Counties ‘paid it forward’ by giving away 15 full-year memberships to deserving families and individuals in the community who are experiencing tough situations, like medical issues, financial issues, and more. Nominations were collected from the community last fall of deserving families and individuals and were thoughtfully and carefully considered. The YMCA had the opportunity to present seven families and eight individuals the gift of full-year memberships in 2020. These recipients were provided resources and support to learn, grow, and thrive in a safe and welcoming environment at the YMCA.
Lisa and Eira are a beautiful example of the impact a YMCA membership can have. As 2019 Pay it Forward membership recipients, this mother and daughter team spent the year doing countless hours of therapeutic pool time. But it was so much more than just pool time. You see, Lisa’s two-year-old daughter, Eira, suffers from a rare genetic disorder which affects her physically, mentally, and emotionally and requires an immense amount of care and attention. The YMCA helped Lisa bond with Eira. Instead of worrying about the mounting medical bills and the unpredictable health reports, Lisa and Eira relaxed and enjoyed each other while Eira found comfort in the warm, YMCA pool. It was in this very pool that she learned how to stand and smiled for the very first time.
