School Out Days

Need something for your kiddos to do when there’s no school? Join us for School Out Days at our School Age Learning Centers! Each school-out day is packed with activities that will keep minds sharp and bodies moving. Kids will unplug from technology and engage in fun activities and socialize with friends. Breakfast, snack, and lunch provided! Each day will include fun activities with themes like Grossology, Blast Off to Space, Bubbleology, Camp Maker, and so much more!

Grades K – 5 6:30am – 6:00pm $42/day for drop-ins Offered at ALL YMCA School Age Locations

Theme Descriptions:

Camp Maker: Give a child a cardboard box and their inspiration and imagination comes to life. We call this creative play, and fueling it is what we do best. This school out day is designed to develop the next-generation of innovators. Sample activities include:
• Design and build your own arcade game
• DIY Projects
• Learn about Caine, a 9 year old boy, who changed his neighborhood with cardboard boxes!

Grossology: Gross. Mushy. Crusty. Oozy. This school out day is made for beginning Grossologists to study the science of really gross things. Sample activities include:
• Dissect sterilized owl pellets
• Field trip to Island Park for our annual Lights On Afterschool youth 1K run/walk

Game On: Your challenge should you choose to accept it – play 14 new games over Thanksgiving Break. Brain games, movement games, board games, team games, and solo games…just no video games allowed! Sample activities include:
• YMCA Shark Tank: make a prototype of a new game to pitch to the judges
• Practice being a good winner and loser
• Play games- all sorts!

YMCA On the Case: Join us for a specialty themed science week where students take on the role of forensic scientists and learn elements of crime scene investigation to solve mysteries. Students will use critical thinking, reasoning, and experimentation skills throughout the week. Here’s a few of the mysteries your child will solve:
• CSI Lab: Extract DNA from a fruit
• Fingerprint Analysis: Who done it?
• Chromatography: Ink test experiments to discover what it is!

DUCT Tape Workshop: Tear your way through this school out day. Let your creative juices flow in the world of Duct tape possibilities. You’ll spend your time creating many different amazing and useful Duct tape crafts. Sample activities include:
• Perform the tasks needed to survive on a deserted island with only duct tape
• Design wearable art such as a wallet, tie, or headband
• Complete crafts like a bookmark, flower, or coaster

Blast Off! Blast off in to a whole new world of exploration as we take over NASA headquarters! See if you have what it takes to be NASA’s next astronaut or scientist. Our students will use critical thinking as well as physical activity as they get ready to launch in to a world of fun and learning.
• Launch self-made rockets
• Complete an astronaut basic training workout
• Decode a space message

Thingamajig: Spring break at the Y is a STEM festival! Put your tinker skills to the test and engage in a heathy competition to build your brain and muscles! Sample activities include:
• Cooperative invention challenges
• Lego Lab
• Build an unique thingamajig creation

Bubble•ology: Break out the bubbles! Join us for a specialty themed day where students discover the fun and science of a childhood classic. Sample activities include:
• Human body bubbles: discover what it feels like to be inside a bubble
• Try to make a bubble snake longer than your favorite Y staff!
• Make bubbles bounce on your hand without breaking

Readers’ Theatre: Transform into an up-and-coming actor, or back stage crew member. By the end of this school out day, students will be ready to perform for a live audience! Sample activities include:
• Design costumes
• Build a set
• Get in to character with vocal expression and gestures
